Cultural Heritage and the City - week1

Futurelearn sweet Futurelearn.

Suddenly, I've decided to go om my armchair education with Futurelearn. Their policy has changed a bit but fortunately there's a possibility to take courses free of charge.

So, here you are - Cultural Heritage and the City - the course provided by the European University Institute (EUI)

I paid attention to the course because it shows how cities today create and brand their own cultural heritage. And this issue is quite interesting to me coz I already noticed this tendency and I really enjoy what it brings into the city life.

This is why I got interested in St.Petersburg. That is what I'm now looking for here.

More?

To begin with it's necessary to mention tangible heritage (which is well-known to everybody) like old buildings and archeological sites, then natural heritage (parks, mountains, rivers) follows. But we will speak mostly about intangible heritage - festivals, traditions, dances, music, street culture. Intangible heritage is also about communication and relationship.

Another interesting classification is about official and unofficial heritage.The latter is what can create people of the city themselves, something what isn't recognized and catalogued by any kind of authorities #democraization_of_heritage_creation
Btw the term 'unofficial' doesn't express any judgement of value or quality.

Heritage is a part of culture. But it oriented as a rule towards the past. Though nowadays we speakof a phenomenon of #living_heritage

Now my answers/suppositions to questiions which I've come across within the first week of the course:

1. Give 5 words that come to your mind on the notion of culture -
Mine are the following: HUMAN, CREATION, COMMUNITY, NATIONAL, ART. To my mind these are both the most universal (for different cultures) and the most essential elements. I was surprised that I tended to choose something which is quite abstract but nevertheless they don't seem to me obscure or ambiguous.

2. What is the attitude of the authorities of your country towards contemporary heritage? Do they focus on the past or on the present?
In fact, it's not easy to give a certain point of view. The official authorities as a rule focus on the past. But due to international influence we get some tendencies and events which unusual for us (used to be unusual) and all this, more or less, are promoted by government (this or that way). To my mind, contemporary heritage is still unofficial in Russia and mostly promoted rather by individuals than by some authorities. Especially, when we are speaking of some events that used to consider related to subcultures (which btw I appeciate the most).

Времена не выбирают

По наводке дневниковцев попала в бесплатную студию игры на гитаре. И даже хожу какое-то время. Что-то вспоминаю, что-то узнаю. И даже раздумываю над тем, что случись оказия - привезу свой инструмент.

Но речь здесь даже не об этом, а о причинах... Я ни в коем случае не претендую на выступления/душу компании и что там еще причитается человеку с гитарой... а претендую я на причастность к магической ритуальности. Ритуальности музыки и ритуальности танца.

Pronunciation issue

Have heard a podcast from 'The TEFL Show' on pronunciation.
That was '6 Things You Should Know About Pronuncation'

Podcast Outline

And I've come across some interesting things:
- There was a research that showed that in groups of students/people consisting of participants from different countries people were able to understand each other despite the fact that they speak English quite bad. That proves that we can speak about certain 'Lingua Franca Core'. That means that communication can be successful even if spealers make mistakes. So we have to admit that some things about the language are quite unimportant for a speaker to be understood. The others are, otherwise, are crucial for your intelligibility.

1. Consonants
Btw it's true that teachers and textbooks pay more attention to vowels rather than consonants. But the latter are much more important for intelligibility.
2. The voiseless [Ө] and the voiced [ð]

(!) The main thing about teaching pronunciation - Teach your students pronunciate sounds the way they can be understood in the international community. So some ajustments can be reasonable.

3. Aspiration
4. Vowel quality - Length(!)

For Advansed students: A vowel gets longer before voiced consonants than before the voiceless: Cab vs. cat. - have no idea about that))

5. The individual stress isn't so crucial for intelliglbllity. Though this statement makes me (as an English teacher cry). But if we speak only about intelligibility.... let it be)

6. Foreign accent is OK. That I knew very well.
(!) As long as it doesn't influence your intelligibility.
In fact, there's no reason to hide it.

Btw you might notice that in all textbooks there are a lot of listenings with non-native English speakers. That is a significant observation.
There was also an interesting research that non-native speakers try harder to be understood than the native.

To know the rules of pronunciation, nevertheless, are necessary for receptive pronunciation skills.

L’esprit d’escalier

Интересно, на настанет такое время.... А нет, видимо не настанет... когда... когда я перестану жалеть о каждом разговоре, беседе, в которых участвую. Дико раздражает мое неумение вести толковую беседу на равных. Всегда чувствую себя или ребенком (который ничего не знает о мире) или ужасным нытиком с отсутствием самооценки (неспособным говорить о чем-то еще, кроме своих неудач). Всякий раз ругаю себя и за то и за другое, ибо хорошо понимаю, когда у меня включается тот или иной муд) Но мне редко удается сладить с собой на этапе "до-того-как-ляпнул-фигню". Что уж говорить об адекватных конструктивных беседах с окружающими - они мне не под силу.

Да, можно списать на некую беспомощность перед обстоятельствами (через них проходят в жизни все), но как бы сказал Энди Уорхл: "Ну и что?"

Conditionals and places

422. Soon I can give lectures on Conditionals at any times of the day and of the night. Probably the Universe makes me learn them this way - by presenring demo-lessons to language schools (no idea why I always come across this very topic). I do like the feeling when I manage to present my knowledge of English in English in a proper way. And this is the very thing I like speaking of teaching. That with every other explanation your presentation becomes better. So do your language skills. Frankly speaking, this is the reason that induced me to prepare a demo-lesson for an interview via Scype yesterday. Being a teacher is not my dream job (I am not that big fan of people) but this is quite likely to be a single job that gives me an opportunity to stay a student, a learner. To stay always alert of the language usage. As I always worry that I forget things (rules, words, information of any kind) this seems to be a chance to worry a bit less than usual.

9. I have noticed that lately my life sometimes tend to focus around some places, I mean places on the map. Although there is no obvious connection between them. For example a number of ehibitions I've recently attended took place not far from Saint Isaac's Square: ProToArt festival, the Maps exhibition at the headquarters of the Russian geographical society or The State Museum of the History of Religion. Another example - the area around the subway station of Chernyshevskaya. The language school where I was working in July, the place where there was an interview and an introduction to the position of a call-centre operator (not sure whether I will study some data I should know almost by heart or not). Then there also the library is sutuated where I listened to a lection on duelling and where I'm going to have a job interview (yep, I'm looking for a job without any system or any logic). I like the way all these events enriched and are enriching these places for me. Like more details appeared there which related to me. The same is true for other places as well but the fact that I've found myself there recently so often somehow underlines the feeling of the place.

6. Have returned to reading 'How to teach English'. It's interesting to see that many ideas that the book describes were given us when I studied at our University in Rostov. Though probably in some different way, probably some foci differed but all the same. Now I'm going through chapter 5 and I can't say that I'm coming across anything totally new. That means that I have an idea more or less what teaching is (probably I don't know some concepts, terms and methods but I use them without thinking). That's somehow connected with my teachers from different language schools I attended. Because since the very beggining of my urge to languages I've paid attention how they gave information. But I am interested in finishing this book to be aware of terms and concepts, to understand the essence of the methods. To speak the language teachers of the English language use. For example "ESA lesson sequence". That divides the lesson into an Engage part, a Study part and an Activate part. That's quite a natural divisioin... but when you know that as an approach that provides your teaching with some system and structure. I'll try to keep on reading, come what may.

38. Finally I somehow enjoyed freestyle waltzing coz we were given some patterns and opportunity to practice them. So freestyle is stopping to be so terryfing ....like 'what I am suppose to do, how I suppose to react... let me go'. Sometimes I was able to predict my partner's actions and answer to them just in time. That appeared to be quite possible. But you have to be very attentive and careful. A funny thing: How does a lady understand that it's time to do an inside turn? When a gentleman raises his left hand up. Like a Pavlov's dog. Can't get rig of this very image.

1. From what I've got from the plot of 'American Psyho' I have to admit that a film is not worse than a book. The book contains too many details that copy each other, moreover, it slurs the character's development. To my liking it lacks contemplating. It lacks grounds. Though their absence is likely to mean something as well. As for the film. This time the lack of screen time did good. They have to reach the scenes to house as much infomation given in the book as possible. So it results in a number bright pieces forged together. That made dynamics. Especially I appreciated how Patrick's views on some music bands were presented. In the film they are adressed to other characters not to a reader/viewer. That shows the difference between Patrick and other people, what they focus on.

Право:
Судебники - являлись не просто прозой в привычном смысле этого слова. Формулировки законов и правил оформлялись по определенным языковым канонам: стилистика, выражения, аллитерация и т.п.

"Серый Гусь/GRÁGÁS" - самый известный исландский судебник.
В судебниках не было зафиксировано наказаний [утлаге] в виде смертной казни. Описывались две высших меры наказаний:
1) Изгнание из социума;
2) Изгнание из социума на всю жизнь.

Тинге ака вече.

Право не распространялось на рабов, т.к. их не считали частью социума.
А вот животное можно было судить.

Хулитильные стихи (как насылающие заклятия) и любовные (имеющие своей целью приворот) были запрещены, так как считалось, что они имели силу над тем, кому были адресованы.

Поэтическая традиция:
Современники были достаточно грамотны, чтобы понимать и разбираться в поэзии на высоком уровне.
Смыслы и значения, представляющие сложность для понимания исследователей, были полностью понятны современников.

1) Эддическая поэзия (эпос)
Направлена в прошлое, на события, которые уже не имеют связи с реальным миром. Это не авторская поэзия. Возможно, эти произведения были связаны с некими ритуалами.
Каждый, кто произносил текст произведения мог считаться ее автором.

2) Скальдическая поэзия
Всегда авторская. Очень много канонов в письме. Часто важнее КАК сказано, чем ЧТО сказано.

Кенинг - перефраз. Например, "конь моря" - корабль; "дух битвы" - воин; "комар свары" - ворон.
Кенинги значительно раздвигали семантические границы слова.

Руническое письмо:

1) Старший футарк (24 руны) - древне-германский алфавит.
Магическая функция - письмена/сообщения на старшем футарке предназначались не людям, но богам - коммуникация с божественным миром.
Использовалась форма первого лица единственного числа: "Я сделал то-то... "

2) Младший футарк (16 рун) - скандинавский и английский алфавит - письмо эпохи викингов. В отличие от старшего футарка не объединяло все германские племена. Обслуживает уже сферы человеческой деятельности - "светское письмо". Как следствие легче поддается пониманию и декодированию.
Использовалась форма третьего лица единственного числа: "Моргот сделал то-то... " (в отличии от формы первого лица единственного числа несет уже другое информационное содержание).

#голосвещи - надписи сделанные от лица предмета: "Меня изготовил то-то...", "Я принадлежу тому-то..."

Часто надписи сопровождаются орнаментальным рисунком и в зависимости от этого "контекста" получают определенное значение. В зависимости от "окружения" смысл высказывания может варьироваться. Принципиально важный аспект при декодировании информации.

Саги:

Сага- устный рассказ о знаковых важных событиях. Это скорее не жанр, а тип рассказа.

1) Родовые саги
рассказывали о самих исландцах, их быте, и жизни, как она была.
Любая сага начинается с генеалогии - представления в каких родственных отношениях и с кем состоит персонаж.

2) Королевские саги
рассказывали о политической династической истории Норвегии (приблизительно охватывали период до 13-14 вв).

Родовые и королевские саги были правдивы, они рассказывали о том, что реально происходило.
В сагах есть отдельные места, где автор рассказывает/ссылается на то, где и откуда он узнал о событиях, о которых он собирается рассказывать.

3) Лживые саги
Близкие к сказкам. Автор в первую очередь заинтересован в увлекательности сюжета: драконы, "богатыри" и прочие чудеса.

Роль родословной имела большое значение как в сагах. так и в реальной жизни. Перечисление родственных отношений играет важную роль в сагах, хотя современным читателям практически ничего не говорит.
В сагах генеалогии нет у рабов и вымышленных персонажей (предназначенных только для движения сюжета). Отсутствие родословной может сообщать слушателю, что данного персонажа не существовало в реальности.

Согласно древней системе престолонаследия, любой сын короля мог претендовать на престол. В последствии эта система и принятая по европейской традиции система смешались и вызывали путаницу.
Христианские имена неохотно принимались норвежцами, так как в них не содержалось никакой информации и их носителях.
Сыновей бастардов традиционно называли "Магнусами".

Снорри Стурлусон:
Исландец, одна из ключевых исторических и политических фигур своего времени. Автор текстов "Малая Эдда" и "Круг земной".
Своими политическими действиями привел к тому, что Исландия потеряла независимость. Симпатизировал Норвегии. Погиб в результате политического заговора.
Стихи Снорри дошли до нас в малом числе. Многие из них его современниками оценивались очень низко.

It's seems to be high time!

Right now I am looking through the manuals to brush up (at least) my English. That somehow helps me to restore my confidence in my command of language. No matter how pathetic it looks like.

So, today I've come across Tenses and revised 'Different ways of expressing future actions.'

The ways are from the manual, the examples are from my life (well, more or less).
Well, this is the point to keep a diary, isn't it?

Here is 4 ways to express future actions without using Future Tenses

To be going to - denotes planned and intended actions.

I'm going to start looking for a room to rent in July.
I'm going to call to the book store next week.
My friends and I are not going to go out of town this weekend.

Be to - officially arranged actions.

I am to get my master's degree diploma on the 13th of July.
My danse classes are to start on the 12th of July.
By the end of the month graduate students are to leave the dorm.

Be about to - something's going to happen very soon.

I am about to start watching a documentary film.
They are about to drop in.
She is about to finish her reading.
We are about to leave for a trip.

The Present Simple Tense - fixed actions with verbs of motion

I go out at 2 o'clock.
I come to her place in a week.
We leave in a couple of hours.
